Diamonds - General - How do you evaluate fancy coloured diamonds – what criteria should I look at?
As with all diamonds, you need to look at the “four C’s”: Clarity, Colour, Cut and Carat weight.
For natural fancy coloured diamonds, the colour is the most important criteria for determining the diamond’s value and therefore its price. Some colours, such as red, green, pink and blue, are rarer than others, and are therefore more expensive. Also, if the diamond possesses a very intense or pure colour this will raise the price, regardless of which colour it is.
The quality and clarity of the diamond will also have an impact on its value. A diamond that has few or no impurities will be more valuable than a diamond of a lesser quality. In addition, just like the price of gold and other precious metals, diamond prices follow market fluctuations. The market price and prices obtained at public sales will reflect these fluctuations as well as the characteristics of the particular diamond being bought or sold.
