This latest addition to the Royal Mint’s highly acclaimed Queen’s Beasts series features the unicorn of Scottish heraldry, as artfully realized by artist, Jody Clark.
The reverse features a rearing and majestic unicorn, with the English shield and lion-bearing coat of arms in front of it.
Also on the reverse, the name of the coin, details of content, purity and weight, as well as the 2019 year of issue.
The coin’s obverse bears Clark’s impressively realistic portrait of Elizabeth II in profile, flawless in her Diamond diadem and teardrop earrings.
This effigy is brought into crisp relief by a textured field of the finest, dotted micro-engraving and is joined on the obverse by Elizabeth II’s regal title, along with the coin’s unique denominational value.
Not only did the beasts depicted in this bespoke series herald Elizabeth II, in statue form, at her 1953 inaugural ceremony, each heraldic beast also has particular significance for one or more of the four great countries of the United Kingdom.
