The goalies who played hockey during the Original Six era were some of the toughest athletes to compete in any sport. They played with little protective gear, no face/head protection. Unlike today's players, they were poorly paid and had little support from the team if they were injured.

Gerry Cheevers helped the Boston Bruins to Stanley Cup victories in 1970 and 1972. He is pictured on the reverse wearing his trademark mask, with stichmarks drawn on from every time he was hit in the face. He displayed a "flopping" style and was often seen on his knees or on his side, and had a lifetime 2.89 GAA.
