ABOUT THE COOK ISLANDS

The Cook Islands dollar was established in 1987 and co-circulated with the New Zealand dollar. There were 4 banknotes and 6 coins issued up until 1995 when Cook Islands began a transition to only use the New Zealand dollar. The Cook Islands eventually ceased to be legal tender in 2015, paving the way for commemorative coins that are produced today.

Since Cook Islands has no official mint, they rely on foreign mints to create their coins. Each coin bears the mark of Queen Elizabeth II’s portrait on the reverse and a wide assortment of themes, shapes and colors on the obverse. The Mint of Poland, The Pobjoy Mint, and The New Zealand Mint frequently produce coins and other bullion for the Cook Islands.
