The Mayflower and its approximately 100 passengers set sail from the south of England in September 1620. The original destination of the Mayflower was actually the existing Virginia colony in the mid-Atlantic region of the Eastern seaboard. However, a delay in departing England and bad weather during the journey resulted in the ship arriving in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Lacking supplies, the Puritans decided to stay put in the north and settled the first colony in New England, shaping the future of the American colonies.
The Continental Congress asked Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and Thomas Jefferson to form a committee to design a Great Seal. Franklin proposed the United States Great Seal to feature Moses, rather than the bald eagle. His design has Moses standing on the shore, parting the Red Sea, overwhelming Pharaoh who is in an open chariot, a sword in this hand. Rays from a pillar of fire in the clouds reaching to Moses, to express that he acts by command of God.
