Brumby is a term used to describe feral horses in Australia. According to tradition, the Australian Brumbies were a group of horses released into the wild by soldier and pastoralist James Brumby when he was transferred from Sydney to Van Diemen’s Land in 1801. The Brumby has become a national symbol representing Australia's history. Although Brumbies can be found throughout Australia, they are best-known to be found in the Australian Alps and are mostly descended from horses that belonged to early British settlers like Brumby.
