Lady Justice is an allegorical representation of morality and impartiality in the legal system, a concept that is almost as old as organized societies. In ancient Greece, Themis was the goddess that represented the law, order, and justice. Egyptians had Ma’at, who represented order, and carried a sword and the Feather of Truth. The direct origin of Lady Justice comes from the Roman goddess Justitia, the deity for Justice in Roman mythology.
The obverse of the coin features an engraving of a blindfolded Lady Justice holding a sword in her right hand, and weigh scales on her left hand. The word “Justice” is engraved in an arch at the top of the coin. The coin also has the year and the inscription “FIDES ET JUSTITIA” (Faith and Justice) engraved on the left and right of the muse’s hips.
