The wombat is a quadrupedal marsupial, native to Australia. Best known for its burrowing abilities and reverse pouch. Found in the forests, mountains, and heathland areas of Australia, the wombat can grow up to one meter in length and is very adaptable to its terrain. All species of wombat are protected across Australia.

A marsupial is a mammal whose newborns are carried around in their mothers' pouch early in life.

The splendid fairywren is a small, long tailed blue bird native to Australia. It is notable for being a 'socially monogomous' bird. It will form partners with one male and one female. Each partners mates with another and even assists in raising their young.

The coin incorporates an authentication feature in the form of a micro-laser engraved letter. Detectable under a magnifying glass, it is designed to make it significantly more difficult for the coin to be counterfeited.

ABOUT THE PERTH MINT

The Perth Mint opened in 1899 as the British Royal Mint's 3rd branch in Australia. The historical Hay Street location handled gold refining until moving to a modern facility in April 1990. Ownership of the mint was transferred to the Government of Western Australia in July of 1970. Under an agreement with the Commonwealth Treasury, they were empowered to mint and market gold, silver, and platinum as Australian legal tender to investors and collectors worldwide. Today, they are amongst the elite world mints whose pure gold, silver, and platinum items are trusted without question. Items such as the Australian Nugget, Silver Coin Series (Kangaroo, Kookaburra, Koala, and Platypus to name a few), as well as the Australian Lunar Gold and Silver Coin Series are extensively sought after by bullion investors worldwide.
