The Nutcracker is a classic story known internationally for its ballet adaptions that are performed during the winter season. Among Clara and the Nutcracker are several other characters, the most notable one being the Mouse King as the villain. This silver bar depicts a beautiful rendition of the Mouse King with vibrant coloring and detail that matches along with the rest of the series.
In 1816 in Berlin, Prussian author Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann wrote "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King" as part of the Kinder-Mahrchen, Children's Stories collection. The story centred around a young Marie Stahlbaum who received a toy Nutcracker for Christmas and was transported to a magical kingdom of dolls. There, the Nutcracker defeats the evil Mouse King and his army to save the kingdom and, in the end, comes alive as a real boy.
Alexandre Dumas' retelling of the story "Histoire d'un casse-noisette", in 1844, told the same plot with the only difference being that Marie's name was changed to Clara. This version was used as the basis for the ballet, composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov.
