The Boston Tea Party was an American political protest in colonial Massachusetts. The target was the Tea Act of May 10, 1773, which allowed the British East India Company to sell tea from China in American colonies without paying taxes apart from those imposed by the Townshend Acts. The colonists' protests against British taxation came to a head on the night of December 16, 1773, when a group of men known as the 'Sons of Liberty' boarded three ships moored on Griffin Wharf: the Beaver, Eleanor and Dartmouth, each loaded with tonnes of East India Company tea.
During a meticulously planned operation, the Sons of Liberty dumped 342 chests of tea into the icy Boston waters, enough to brew 18 million cups! While the cargo was destroyed, there was no violence, nothing was stolen, and no damage was made to the ships or their crews. The Sons of Liberty had even swept the decks clean and put everything back where they had found it.
As a result of the Boston Tea Party, the British closed down Boston Harbour, cutting off a significant source of colonial trade and income. This served to harden the colonists' resolve against the British, sparking a series of coordinated protests that ultimately led to the first acts of the American Revolution on April 19, 1775.
St Helena and The East India Company joined forces in the mid-17th Century when the Company used the island as a stopping point on voyages between India and the UK. The Company was granted a charter to govern St Helena in 1657. Over the next hundred years, officials occupied the island, where they enjoyed a relatively peaceful life in the tropics. Today The East India Company and St Helena work together to issue gold and silver coins under the authority of the government of St Helena, capturing stories in precious metal for future generations to treasure.
