Jimi Hendrix is widely regarded as the greatest and most influential electric guitar player of all time. Even though his superstar status spanned just four years, his innovative style, mesmerising stage presence, and dazzling technique were simply revolutionary.
Born on 27 November 1942 in Seattle, Washington, Jimi acquired his first guitar at the age of 15. Influenced by diverse music genres, notably blues and rock and roll, he soon formed his first band. A move to London in September 1966, however, heralded the meteoric rise of Jimi’s fortunes. Taking Britain by storm with band The Jimi Hendrix Experience, he began an intense period of astonishing creativity with 'Purple Haze', 'Little Wing', and 'Spanish Castle Magic', to name a few of his legendary recordings.
Aged 27, singer, songwriter and guitarist extraordinaire, Jimi Hendrix passed away in 1970. A ground-breaker, a genius, an all-time great, his name is burned into the annals of music history.
The coin portrays a coloured photo of Jimi Hendrix playing his famous electric guitar at the Northern California Folk-Rock Festival in San Jose, California, in May 1969. He is wearing flamboyant clothing synonymous with the 60s era, including a patterned bandana around his head. The design includes a purple and pink psychedelic pattern and the inscription ‘JIMI HENDRIX’ in orange handwritten lettering. Also within the design is The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark.
Accompanied by a numbered certificate of authenticity, the coin is housed in a presentation case and superbly illustrated shipper.
The Perth Mint opened in 1899 as the British Royal Mint's 3rd branch in Australia. The historical Hay Street location handled gold refining until moving to a modern facility in April 1990. Ownership of the mint was transferred to the Government of Western Australia in July of 1970. Under an agreement with the Commonwealth Treasury, they were empowered to mint and market gold, silver, and platinum as Australian legal tender to investors and collectors worldwide. Today, they are amongst the elite world mints whose pure gold, silver, and platinum items are trusted without question. Items such as the Australian Nugget, Silver Coin Series (Kangaroo, Kookaburra, Koala, and Platypus to name a few), as well as the Australian Lunar Gold and Silver Coin Series are extensively sought after by bullion investors worldwide.
