Each of these gold coins contains one troy ounce Fine Gold, minted in 1980 in the West Point branch (mint mark not present on the coin) of the United States Mint, these coins are part of the American Arts Commemorative series. The 1980 Grant Wood gold medallion was the first release of the series, designed by Frank Gasparro (his initials are included on both the reverse and obverse side).

The American Arts Commemorative Series was a series of bullion coins (also referred to as gold bullion medallions). The intent of the series was to compete with the growing popularity of the South African Krugerrand gold bullion coins and other bullion coins. Each medallion features different American artists, including Louis Armstrong, Helen Hayes, Robert Frost, and many more. A total of ten gold bullion medallions were released between 1980 and 1984.
