Instead, the war galvanized the Nation, the individuals living in Canada, the First Nations who fought alongside the British, and freed African slaves who strove to fight for the Canadian cause. At the war's conclusion, tens of thousands of men gave their lives. However, the foundation was set for the birth of a Great Nation. Canada gained its own independence on July 1st, 1867.
