The Royal Canadian Mint's oversized ode to Canada’s last penny.

This year (2022) marks the 10th anniversary of Canada’s last one-cent circulation coin, the last one struck before Canadians bade farewell to the penny. To commemorate the anniversary, and to honour the coin’s 154-year history, G. E. Kruger Gray’s beloved maple leaf twig design has been brought back to life and immortalized in five kilograms of 99.99% pure silver. With its impressive diameter of 180 millimetres, this limited-edition piece is the largest Canadian one-cent coin ever minted. It’s so large, the RCM even incorporated a life-sized reproduction of the 2012 one-cent design into this coin’s reverse, where its round shape forms the “0” in the year “2022”.

The ultimate tribute to the historic workhorse of Canada’s circulation coinage.

  • The largest cent. The Royal Canadian Mint proudly presents the largest Canadian one-cent coin, or penny, ever minted. Crafted in the finest silver (99.99% pure), this extraordinary one-cent coin weighs five kilograms and features a 180 mm diameter.
  • A 10th anniversary tribute. Enjoy this nostalgic look back at Canada’s one-cent circulation coin and its iconic design, as the RCM marks the 10th anniversary of the last penny struck at its Winnipeg facility.
  • Exceedingly rare. This is the ultimate addition to any circulation-themed collection, but only 150 are available to collectors worldwide.
  • NO GST/HST. (if applicable)

A fixture on the penny since its first appearance in 1937, G. E. Kruger Gray’s maple leaf twig is twice featured on this coin’s reverse.

Sized like a real penny, the 2012 one-cent coin design forms the “0” in the year “2022”. It’s a unique way of bridging the past and present!

Housed in the Royal Canadian Mint's finest wooden collector case, each 5 kg fine silver coin comes with a special booklet certificate that includes the story of Canada’s one-cent coin (1858-2012).

  • Roughly 35 billion Canadian one-cent coins were minted between 1908 (the Royal Canadian Mint's first year of operations as the Ottawa branch of the Royal Mint) and 2012, when the last penny was struck at their high-tech facility in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

The 5 kg fine silver coin’s reverse features a large-scale reproduction of G. E. Kruger Gray’s iconic maple leaf twig design, as seen on Canadian one-cent circulation coins issued from 1937 to 2012 (with the exception of 1967). The nature-inspired image features two upright, five-lobed maple leaves attached to a small twig. To commemorate the 10TH anniversary of Canada’s last penny, a life-sized reproduction of the 2012 one-cent coin design forms the number “0” in the year “2022”. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.

Housed in a circular capsule, each coin comes in an elegant burled-wood case bearing the Royal Canadian Mint logo and wordmark. The case provides several options for highlighting and displaying your exquisite collectible: you can leave the coin inside and view it through the lid’s round acrylic window, which is sized to the coin’s dimensions; or you can remove the insert, which doubles as a custom frame. The 8x8-inch certificate booklet is housed beneath the display compartment, in a spring-loaded drawer lined with velvet-like flocking. For added protection, the burled-wood case is packaged in a custom set-up box and arrives in a Canadian-made Nanuk protective shipping case.

The Royal Canadian Mint is known as one of the most reputable mints in the world. The Ottawa Branch of the Royal Mint opened in 1908 and was renamed The Royal Canadian Mint in 1931 when control was transferred to the Canadian government. The Royal Canadian Mint is renowned for producing some of the highest quality and purity of gold and silver bullion coins and bars in the world. Their high standards for excellence and quality allowed them to be the first refinery to manufacture 9999 fine gold bullion coins in 1982, as well as the first to reach 99999 fine gold purity in 1998.
