DESIGN

Designed by Canadian artist Nathalie Lagacé, the coin's reverse features a finely detailed, engraved rendering of a sugar maple (Acer saccharum) leaf. Blue rhodium surrounds the leaf and fills the field, where a laser-engraved maple leaf pattern forms a dynamic backdrop. Both the pattern and the blue rhodium plating similarly appear on the obverse, which features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.

Acer saccharum, the sugar maple, is perhaps the most famous maple species found in Canada—it's the preferred species for maple syrup production. Its range in Canada extends from Lake of the Woods and southwestern Ontario to the Maritime provinces.
