The 1/2 sovereign was an English gold coin first introduced in 1544 under King Henry VIII’s reign. The 1/2 sovereign was minted until 1603 and then was discontinued until 1817 when it was minted again for circulation until World War II. Minting began again in 1980 in limited quantities as a bullion/collector coin.
