The American Eagle was first released in gold in 1988 in a one-ounce weighting. Since then the Gold edition has enjoyed the same success as the silver, as it remains one of the most sought after and highly recognizable bullion coins in the world. This four-coin set incorporates all the available gold coin weights in a spectacular proof finish. This includes a 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz coin.
Held on the obverse is an adaptation of Lady Liberty by famed designer, Augustus St. Gaudins. St.Gaudin’s rendition is considered by many to be the greatest design of all. Lady Liberty bears a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other, as radial lines representing the sun are seen in the field behind her.
On the reverse, a male bald eagle returns to his nest, bearing an olive branch while a female eagle and young eaglet await his return. The mottos “In God, We Trust” and “E Pluribus Unum” can be seen on the field of the reverse. The legend contains the country of issue, the coins weighting and denominational value.
